In 2002, border collie handlers and their dogs traveled back to the
Estate, near Bala in North Wales, where the first sheepdog trials were
ever recorded to have been held, back in 1873.
The Welsh committee organized the grandest of events, a sheepdog trial
and country fair. It was to be a level of competition and organisation that
would be hard to beat into the future. The competition was very close, down
to the wire, with many Border Collie enthusiast still discussing the final
outcome. In the end, Aled Owen and Bob won over from Jim Cropper and Sid,
but by the very narrowest of margins.
In 2005, the 2nd of the ISDS World Sheepdog Trials was held near
Tullamore in Ireland. The Irish managed a grand event with over 10,000
spectators coming to this sheepdog trial on the Sunday, welcomed by a
bright and sunny day, ideal for the crowds but not so ideal for the
competing Border collies on this grueling and difficult course. Some
22 countries were represented at this world class sheepdog trial and
from every corner of the world. A full contingent of Border Collies and
their handlers represented the U.S.A. with Canada, New Zealand and many
of the European countries also being represented. Over 200 dogs competed
on the 3 qualifying fields before going on to the Semi Finals on the
Saturday and then the Finals on the Sunday.
