Camera shots to best capture the different aspects of the World Sheep Dog Trial
Before we even got over to Ireland dad had all our days planned out and where
we were going to be set up with our cameras. Dad wanted to make it so that his
camera was the main one up in the little hut. (And knowing that dad is the experienced
one I was more than happy to let him get all the main shots.) My camera was then
positioned completely differently to where he was as to get a view from another
perspective, down the field to the right of the course and looking back towards the
handlers post and the stands. So, dad was on the top of the hill where the Judge’s Box
was, and I was set up down the right side of the course so I could get a side view of
the dog and sheep, and a good front shot of the handler. This plan worked out really
well since now that I’m editing the footage together, I’m able to take dad’s wider shots
of behind the handler and what they’re seeing, and then cut in with my close up footage
of the dog or the sheep or the front view of the handler whistling to the dog. All of
it is working out really well. My other job was to get an interview with each of the
handlers after they had completed their runs. Not an easy job.
