Producing my next video – Starting Your
Border Collie on Cattle, Sheep or Ducks
In the planning of Starting Your
Border Collie on Cattle, Sheep or Ducks, I realized that I would need several young
dogs. I had 4 young Border Collies almost ready to start
but decided that I needed a 2 month old pup
as well to show the early months. These early
months are so important in the development of a young working Border
Collie.
So the plan was that one of these young dogs would start on sheep
and then continue her training on both sheep and cattle. Another
would start on sheep and then move completely onto cattle, a common
practice for many farmers and ranchers. One would start on dry cows
in the winter and then continue through on both cows and steers. The
young 2 month old pup ended up being the one to start on a small
group of three steers in the summer months and then finally one
would begin her training on ducks and then, once she was balancing
and gathering, I would move her onto cattle, both cows and steers.
And that's how it all materialized. The filming was continual for
about 16 months, with over 20 hours of footage.
As the last edit was being completed on my editing decks, I swore
then that this was the last Border Collie training tape I was ever
making. I didn't care what the reviews were going to say, that was
it! Finito! As many top handlers have found out, to make an in-depth
video on training Border Collies is a long and arduous process and
often never completed. Fortunately, soon after I released
Starting Your Border Collie on Cattle, Sheep or
Ducks, the magazine reviews were great. I couldn't have
wished for better reviews. I couldn't have written more promising
and praising comments as were written about my new tape. It was a
huge relief!
